Horticulturalist - Urban Agriculture
Alternatives is looking for a horticulturist for it’s Rooftop Garden Project executed with the City Farm School ecoleader. It is a project founded to facilitate education through an experience-based model. Alternatives is an exciting initiative that addresses food security and urban environmental health. Our project empowers urban residents to produce their own food, green their neighbourhoods, and build healthy communities.
The candidate will work with a dynamic team. She/he can have access to free classes on food and policy issues during his/her mandate.
Tasks:
- Visit urban vegetable gardens in 6 sites in the city and
- Give personalised horticulture advice to urban gardeners
- Facilitate access to informative documents
Fields of Study:
Agriculture, Landscape Environmental Studies, Sciences, Horticulture, or other related fields
Requirements:
The applicant must be a specialist in horticulture, have experience and confidence in vegetable gardening. Bilingualism is essential (English and French).
Salary: $15/hr, 10hrs per week. The position is for the period of June 18 to October 12.

Urban Agriculture Coordinator- Horticulturalist
Alternative’s Rooftop Garden Project is an exciting initiative that addresses food security and urban environmental health. Our project empowers urban residents to produce their own food, green their neighbourhoods, and build healthy communities.
Tasks:
- Assist with the sale and distribution of self-watering containers
- Recuperate material that could be used for constructing self-watering containers
- Assist in planning and organizing public events related to urban agriculture
- Visit urban vegetable gardens and give horticulture advice
- Facilitate horticulture workshops and gardening sessions
- Support the activities and initiatives of urban gardeners
- Respond to email and phone enquiries about the project
- Translate documents: English/French

Agriculture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Studies, Sciences, Social Sciences, Horticulture, Education, or other related fields
Requirements:
The applicant must have experience and confidence in vegetable gardening. Bilingualism is essential (English and French).
This is a summer student position made available through Canada Summer
Jobs. The applicant must be 30 years old
or under and a full-time student, either in the middle of their studies or
starting school in the fall.
Salary: $11/hr, 35hrs per week. The position is for 8 weeks beginning June 18.

- Assist with the distribution of self-watering containers
- File and archiveproject materials and website content
- Photograph projects, events, and gardens
- Manage Facebook page and list serve
- Respond to email and phone enquiries about the project
- Write about the project for the Alternatives Journal
- Manage and distribute our technical and educational materials
- Translation documents: English/French

Requirements:
Bilingualism is essential (English and French).
This is a summer student position made available through Canada Summer Jobs. The applicant must be 30 years old or under and a full-time student, either in the middle of their studies or starting school full-time in the fall.
