Raise your voice!

Alternatives is a member of the Voices-Voix Coalition, which defends advocacy and dissent in Canada. Alternatives joined this coalition because we have witnessed, first-hand, the way organizations and individuals are treated by the federal government when they openly disagree with the government's policies and decisions. We believe that in a democracy, all citizens and organizations should be free to express themselves without fear of retribution from the government. We encourage our fellow members of Canadian civil society to join the Voices-Voix Coalition, and stand together for a strong Canadian democracy.

The following information has been taken from the Voices-Voix website.

Who is Voices-Voix?

Voices-Voix is a non-partisan coalition of Canadians and Canadian organizations committed to defending our collective and individual rights to dissent, advocacy and democratic space.

We believe that both citizens and governments have positive roles to play in supporting civil society, and in encouraging respect for our democratic rights and values, including free speechtransparency and equality.

More than 200 organizations are members of the Coalition. To become a member-organization, organizations can endorse their Declaration. Individuals can visit their section Raise Your Voice.

What Voices-Voix does

  1. Voices-Voix documents attacks against organizations, individuals and institutions that have raised their voices, to show the pattern of government silencing of free speech, and offer solidarity to those who have been targeted. (See our Facts.)
  2. Voices-Voix promotes debate amongst its members and allies about how to defend the space for democratic dissent and advocacy in Canada, through its forum and events.
  3. Voices-Voix encourages Canadians to raise their voices so that governments meet their core responsibilities to respect the equality, transparency and diversity of voices that make a democracy thrive. (See their website section Raise Your Voice.)

History

The Voices-Voix Coalition was founded on April 21st, 2010. Over 100 representatives of Canadian organizations, including Alternatives, gathered in Ottawa to discuss increasing attacks by the federal government on democratic rights, especially the right to criticize government policies and decisions without suffering retribution, and the right of all citizens to be treated equally by their elected representatives.

Within three months we had drafted and signed a common Declaration, held a press conference to announce our intent to work together, and began research into the attacks that have taken place.

Structure

There is no hierarchy in Voices-Voix. Decisions are made by consensus. Representatives of our member-organizations and allies communicate ideas on how to accomplish their common goals through a forum. All Canadian organizations that endorse the Declaration are welcome to join, except for political parties.

Voices-Voix works with volunteers and interns, who research their facts, assist with their events, create their materials, and so on.

Funds are donated by member-organizations. Voices-Voix is not a charity, but you can donate by contacting the Coalition.
