President Trump: Will the American left meet the challenge?

Saturday, November 26, 2016 - 14:00 - 16:00

Conference by Bhaskar Sunkara, editor-in-chief of Jacobin Magazine, the most popular leftist publication in the United States.

Trump's victory produced quite a shock wave. The consequences, be they geopolitical or domestic, of the election of an openly xenophobic, racist, misogynist person openly opposed to free trade and spearheading a right wing movement can only be explosive.

What will happen to the protest movement articulated around Bernie Sanders? The self proclaimed social democrat whose candidacy was only defeated by dubious schemes from the Democratic Party's heads betting everything on Hillary Clinton ? Many observers now ask themselves if Sanders would have done a better job at capturing the popular rage of the left and progressive base that keeps manifesting itself against the elites and Wall Street.

The campaign of Vermont's senator had such an impact for large sections of the population, in many different states and regions of the country, that it seems impossible that it should disappear without leaving anything behind. Will we witness an attempted reform of the Democratic Party or rather the emergence of left coalitions and formations to stand up to “trumpism”? What will be the reaction of the anti-racist social (Black Lives Matter), environmental and anti-austerity (15$ minimum campaigns) movements to this openly pro-cops, pro-oil, pro-business president who threatens to deport millions of non status immigrants?

Will the American left meet the challenge?

To talk about this upcoming period that promises to be turbulent, we have invited one of the most prominent voices of the American left, Bhaskar Sunkara, Jacobin Magazine's editor-in-chief. The magazine is openly socialist with an accessible content that marries high intellectual abilities with analysis. Jacobin consistently renews the left's discourse while stimulates through its readership the activists on the ground.
