Alternatives in Indonesia

Alternatives in Indonesia

Alternatives has launched the projects “Supporting Peace in Papua” and “Strengthening Peace in Sulawesi” in conjunction with CIDA. These two initiatives aim to end the conflicts in Eastern Indonesia. Following a series of missions in Indonesia between 1999 and 2001, Alternatives began working with CIDA to create economic opportunities for indigenous groups, improve dialogue on autonomy and strengthen the power of civil society. The success of this work is due to various networks of local partners set up by Alternatives to promote peaceful dialogue among various Indonesian sectors, while advocating minimal police intervention.

The Alternatives program coordinates with major Indonesian NGOs in order to establish close collaboration between the two countries and to encourage the combined intervention of both Canadian and Indonesian civil societies. For these reasons, we are in constant contact with INSIST (Indonesian Society for Social Transformation), LATIN (Institute of Tropical Nature Indonesia), FIELD Indonesia (Farmer Initiatives for Ecological Livelihoods and Democracy), Solidaritas Perempuan (Women’s Solidarity), Bina Desa (Autonomous Village Community Development Foundation), and the PAKTA Foundation of Indonesia.
