Guillaume Hébert joins the group of international elections observers in Honduras

Alternatives has sent a member of its Administrative Council, Guillaume Hébert, also a researcher at Iris (Institut de recherche et d'information socio-économique) to join 180 electoral observers in Honduras from November 17th to 27th 2013 in order to watch over the upcoming general elections, which will take place on November 24th.

The Canadian delegation includes, in addition to Mr. Hébert, representatives from numerous unions, community groups, universities and the former chief of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation, and will be coordinated by Common Frontiers Canada. This observational mission will take place in numerous locations around the country in order to meet various collectives and groups affected by Canadian mining investments, by maquilladoras (factories) and by the tourism industry.

Since 2010, more than 200 individuals have been killed for political reasons, and Honduras is now considered one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists, according to a report from Human Rights Watch published in 2013.

COFADEH, one of the main organizations defending human rights in Honduras, documented at least 16 activists and members of the main opposition party who have become victims of homicide since June 2012.

The mission will take in stride Canada's recent announcement of its signing of a free-trade agreement with Honduras. Michel Lambert, the director of Alternatives, added "In Honduras, it is disconcerting to see that the Canadian government would orient its efforts towards raising corporate profits with investments and business deals in the middle of a political and human-rights crisis."

In Honduras, Alternatives supports the workers of the CUTH (Confederación Unitaria de Trabajadores de Honduras) with the help of many international unions, including the CSN (Confédération de syndicats nationaux)
