The United Workers' Confederation of Honduras is a syndical confederation founded in Honduras in 1992 and affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation.
The UWC (CUTH in French and Spanish) represents union workers, especiallly those in the service sector, public office, trade, construction, health and education. Its mandate is to negotiate collective conventions, to represent the union members before the authorities and to ensure the training and mobilization of its members.

General goals of the internship:
The main objective of the internship is to contribute to the improvement of working conditions for women in the industrial sector (more specifically, in maquilas) in the region of San Pedro Sula in Honduras.

More specifically, the project aims to :

  • Reinforce the ability of the partner organization to carry out educational, informative and petition-based campaigns in order to better protect the rights and interests of maquila workers. 
  • Raise awareness of the role of union-building among maquiladora workers.

Aside from these specific goals, the internship aims to:

  • Expose seven young Québécois to an enriching experience in the context of international solidarity in Honduras.
  • Develop the knowledge, skills and experience of seven young Québécois interns in the fields of workers' rights, union rights and communications.

Activities :
This project offers logistical, technological and training support in order to improve the strategies, communication tools and petitions of the UWCH and its members. The project will also require planning meetings, training and the production of audiovisual tools to reinforce their demands for better working conditions of female maquila workers.
