Project Officer for the Women Heads of Households Use of ICT Program in Jaffna with the National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO)

Internship Opportunity

Location: Jaffna, Sri Lanka

Host organisation: National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO)

NAFSO works for a just and prosperous society, where resources are equally distributed, and peace, justice and human rights prevail for all, regardless of race, religion or gender.

Required skills: The candidate must have a technical diploma or university degree in a field related to journalism, media, communication, ICT or any other relevant training. He or she must speak English and have good writing skills.


Help to fight the digital divide by promote the use of computers and new technologies by women, the heads of households, in Jaffna and in the region.

  • Help develop results-based management (RBM) tools.
  • Do a needs assessment for the targeted women, in collaboration with NAFSO.
  • Train a small group of trainers (English-speaking) in collaboration with local associations who already provide services to female heads of familes.
  • Support trainings on ICT use for professional and personal purposes for the targeted women. The trainings will be offered by Sri Lankan trainers in the offices and with the resources of the local associations. The women involved are already involved in microenterprise initiatives implemented by the partner.
  • Organize meetings to explore and promote socio-economic development through ICT at the community level.
  • Update the NAFSO website and suggest improvements.
  • Provide technical support and refresher training to NAFSO's IT team.
  • Design and develop curricula and teaching materials.
  • Evaluate acquired skills.
  • Evaluate and document the program

Other prerequisites: All trainees must complete the training program before their stay abroad. Alternatives will cover the travel and accommodation costs of interns living outside of the Montreal area.

Length of stay abroad: 6 months

Pre-departure training: July 2019

Expected date of departure: August 2019


To be eligible for the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), the candidate must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Have a post-secondary diploma and have obtained a degree or diploma from a university, college, post-secondary technology school, post-secondary institute or CEGEP (general education college and professional in Quebec);
  • Be between the ages of 19 to 30 when the final selection is made (when the contracts between the trainee and Alternatives are signed);
  • Have never participated in the IYIP.
