Strategic Communications Officer on land rights issues with the National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO)

Internship Opportunity

Location: Negombo, Sri Lanka

Host organisation: National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO)

NAFSO works for a just and prosperous society, where resources are equally distributed, and peace, justice and human rights prevail for all, regardless of race, religion or gender.

Required skills: The candidate must have a technical diploma or university degree in a field related to journalism, media, communication, ICT or any other relevant training. He or she must speak English and have good writing skills.

Mandate:

Support NAFSO's advocacy and strategic communications as part of its work on land rights:

  • Review the results-based management (RBM) tools developed by trainees from the previous year.
  • Work with the team to broaden the reach of NAFSO and its flagship projects.
  • Support the production of newsletters, backgrounders, press releases, brochures and other printed tools (in English) to support regional and international information campaigns.
  • Produce short audio-visual productions (audio or video clips) and other communication tools to support the various NAFSO campaigns, particularly on the subject of women’s rights.
  • Develop training tools on the use of video for advocacy purposes.
  • Organize trainings for trainers for the team and volunteers to help strengthen the use of video and ICT for advocacy purposes.
  • Evaluate and document the work.

Other prerequisites: All trainees must complete the training program before their stay abroad. Alternatives will cover the travel and accommodation costs of interns living outside of the Montreal area.

Length of stay abroad: 6 months

Pre-departure training: July 2019

Expected date of departure: August 2019

 

To be eligible for the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), the candidate must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Have a post-secondary diploma and have obtained a degree or diploma from a university, college, post-secondary technology school, post-secondary institute or CEGEP (general education college and professional in Quebec);
  • Be between the ages of 19 to 30 when the final selection is made (when the contracts between the trainee and Alternatives are signed);
  • Have never participated in the IYIP.
