Chile: Gabriel Boric’s victory

Marcela Escribano – December 19th at 5 p.m.

With 70% of the counting of the polls, Gabriel Boric wins with 55%. The right wing has just acknowledged his victory despite the boycott, among others of public transport, to prevent people from going to vote. Nevertheless, it is a great victory resulting from all the popular mobilization, initiated in October 2019. The big winners are the young people, the students, and the feminist movement, who managed to mobilize the whole population to break with the neoliberal model.

This victory symbolizes the end of the ultra neoliberal cycle, symbol of the dictatorship. It is a historic victory almost as important as Allende’s victory in 1970. It is not the victory of traditional political parties in Chile. It is the new left, pluralist and allied to the parties of the traditional left (especially the Communist Party). They have managed to articulate a progressive, feminist and environmentalist platform, integrating new and old social movements and proposing very concrete measures to improve the lives of Chileans: an end to private pension funds, education and health for all, protection of sexual minorities, the environment, recognition of indigenous peoples, etc.

This victory symbolizes the end of the ultra-liberal cycle, symbol of the dictatorship. It is a historic victory almost as important as Allende’s victory in 1970.

A big popular party is organized tonight in the streets of Santiago. Finally, tonight we remember the famous phrase of Allende in 19 73, just before he died: Mucho mas temprano que tarde se abriran las grandes Alamedas para que pase el hombre (y la mujer) libre (Sooner or later the great avenues will be opened for the free passage of women and men.)
