Donations

Why give to Alternatives?

Your contribution helps Alternatives to network, promote and build initiatives led by grassroots and social movements fighting for economic, social, political, cultural and environmental rights, here in Quebec and around the world.

Thanks to your solidarity, we can take action in support of struggles for a healthy environment, democracy and human dignity, which we have done with hundreds of projects in over 35 countries since 1994. This work is even more important now as we enter the second half of the 21st century, a period marked by the erosion of these fundamental rights.

As a non-governmental organization, Alternatives relies on your financial support to accomplish its mission.

NB : The best way to support us is to become a member of Alternatives. One-time donations are less advantageous for the organization than monthly membership fees, but we understand that some people prefer this option. You will be considered a member of Alternatives for one year if you make a one-time donation of $36 or more.

For more information, visit our Become a Member page.

You will automatically receive a free tax receipt if your donation is $20 or more, or upon request if less than $20. (Charitable organization number: 141169086RR0001)

Donors’ FAQs

Who can give to Alternatives?

Alternatives receives donations mainly from individuals, as well as from companies, trade unions, philanthropists, various organizations and governments.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes.  Alternatives is a registered charity, and you will receive a tax deduction for your donation. If you contribute as a member of Alternatives, your tax deduction will be based on the total amount you donated during the fiscal year (January 1st to December 31st). We will send you everything you need to get your tax deduction when you file your tax return.

How are my donations used?

International projects: Alternatives works on projects in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. These projects aim to promote climate justice, democracy, peace, and the dignity of peoples. These projects are generally carried out with local partners, and focus on themes such as food sovereignty, workers’ cooperatives, women’s rights, and democratic media accountability. Alternatives‘ budgets are directed towards these international solidarity projects. For more information, visit our Projects page.

National projects: Alternatives actively participates in public debates on issues related to the well-being of Quebecers, Canadians, and people around the world. We do so by taking a clear position in favour of climate justice and environmental rights, in favour of genuine participatory democracy and in solidarity with the peoples of the world who suffer injustice at the hands of governments, multilateral structures and unethical corporations. We affirm these positions through our public information and awareness campaigns, including organizing debates, seminars, and conferences. We also take this position in our media outlets – the Journal des Alternatives (French) and the Alternatives International Journal (English) – which aim to highlight perspectives that are underrepresented in mainstream media. By donating to Alternatives, you allow us to continue this participation in public debate. You are with us, you speak with us, and you raise your voice with us for the possibility of a better world.

Local projects: Here in Montreal, in addition to our ongoing information work, Alternatives leads two major projects that directly benefit from your support, and aim to improve the lives of Quebec residents. We have been running a very successful and award-winning Urban Agriculture Project since 2003. We also offer a professional integration service for new immigrants, which helps them find employment and integrate into local society. The public debates and conferences we organize to raise awareness about social, environmental, and economic justice are primarily intended for Montreal residents and occasionally for participants from other cities in Quebec and across Canada. When you give to Alternatives, your contributions help make our city greener, our new residents happier, and our governments more responsible.

To empower and raise awareness among youth: Each year, Alternatives sends between 50 and 60 young Canadians to complete internships with our international partners. Nearly two thousand young people have already been interns with Alternatives since 1994. These internships are funded primarily by Global Affairs Canada, as well as other government partners, and the interns themselves. However, running this program also involves additional organizational costs, such as administration and communications. Your financial support allows Alternatives to offset some of these costs, and continue offering young people the opportunity for an incredible educational experience in a developing country, where their participation is greatly appreciated. Please see our Internship page for more information.

For administration and other costs: Alternatives has operating costs that vary from year to year, depending on the number of projects, campaigns, and activities we are able to organize and execute. All this information is available in the reports section.
