Alternatives Montreal would like to express its deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and community of Abdirahman Mohamed Ahmed Al-Rassace.
In Montreal, Abdi was known for his great humanity and intellectual commitment. His lectures, particularly on dependency theory and the dynamics of inequality, left a lasting impression on many people with their rigor, pedagogical approach, and deep sensitivity to the realities experienced by the peoples of the South. A determined activist, he and his comrades took courageous action to defend dignity and justice, notably by helping to cancel a speech by Benjamin Netanyahu in Montreal in 2002.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear and raise many questions. Several observers have suggested that his political views may have put him in danger. Whatever the outcome of the investigations, his death is an immense loss for those who knew him and for all communities committed to justice.
At Alternatives, we know that speaking out against injustice sometimes involves personal risk. But we also know that remaining silent in the face of injustice comes at an even greater collective cost. Her memory reminds us of the importance of continuing our work of international solidarity with integrity, respect, and determination.
We salute his life, his commitment, and the legacy he leaves behind. May his journey continue to inspire those who work for a more just and humane world.
