Michel Lambert, CEO of Alternatives, is a member of the APC Board of Directors. He was in Berlin for two days, November 23 and 24, 2019, for the annual meeting.
The mission of the APC (Association for Progressive Communications) is to “empower and support organisations, social movements and individuals in the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to create communities and strategic initiatives to make a significant contribution to equitable human development, social justice, participatory political processes and environmental sustainability.”
Besides our partnership with Global Affairs Canada’s International Youth Internship Program, “Technology and communication are at the heart of social change,” for APC members and partners in several regions of the world. Alternatives is involved in the APC and is the only APC member in Canada. APC is currently experiencing significant growth, both in terms of budget and in terms of the number of members and partners associated with its work. One of APC’s main programs is the “Women’s Rights Programme” which includes the “Take Back The Tech! ” campaign, which aims to create safe digital spaces and use technology to campaign against gender-based violence. This aspect of APC’s aligns very much with the expertise we are developing in the Middle East through our ongoing projects with women journalists and human rights defenders. We will soon be called upon to reflect on the development of projects with APC in this region.
