Founded in 1963, the League for Rights and Freedoms is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization that aims to raise awareness, defend, and promote the universality, indivisibility, and interdependence of the rights recognized in the International Bill of Human Rights.
The League for Rights and Freedoms is affiliated with the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH).
Throughout its history, the League has participated in various struggles against discrimination and abuses of power, defending civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Its actions have influenced several government policies and contributed to the creation of institutions dedicated to the defense and promotion of human rights.
It has actively participated in the adoption of the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, the creation of the Commission on Human Rights and Youth Rights, and later, the creation of the Human Rights Tribunal, the recognition of the rights of refugees and immigrants, the abolition of the death penalty, the democratization of access to justice, the creation of the legal aid system, and the establishment of the youth protection system.
Since its founding, its actions have targeted the entire population as well as certain groups that, depending on their circumstances, find themselves in vulnerable situations: refugees and immigrants, Indigenous peoples, women, people with functional limitations, people receiving social assistance, etc.
The League takes a stand and intervenes with government and other authorities, both nationally and internationally, to denounce human rights violations. It conducts information, training, and awareness activities aimed at raising awareness as widely as possible about rights issues that may relate to all aspects of life in society.
