NAFSO is a fishermen’s movement working to implement sustainable development models, particularly in the agriculture and fisheries sectors of post-war Sri Lanka. Its activities also aim to promote reconciliation between different groups in the country and support the empowerment of the most vulnerable groups, including displaced persons, religious and ethnic minorities, and women and girls. NAFSO currently has 15 partner organizations in 13 administrative districts, as well as 12,000 members.
NAFSO’s main objectives and areas of activity are:
1. Protecting natural resources and the livelihoods of vulnerable populations and promoting sustainable development models, particularly in coastal areas (training, mobilization, research, and advocacy activities).
2. Empowering women and girls, particularly war widows (innovative economic rehabilitation activities, training, and support for income-generating activities).
3. Reconciliation between the country’s different ethnic and religious communities with a view to establishing a climate of lasting peace (advocacy, dialogue, education, and communication activities, etc.).
