A platform against violence against women journalists in Sudan

Description
Out of a population of 48 million people, the proportion of women journalists in Sudan remains low. According to the Journalists’ Union, the total number of women journalists registered in its national registry is 2,570. In the 2020 Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index, Sudan ranked 159th out of 180 countries surveyed.
Historically, the government has repressed and restricted the work of journalists. In many cases, the government has resorted to various forms of violence and intimidation against journalists, particularly against women journalists, who face the realities of a deeply patriarchal society and a state that has generally restricted women’s freedom of opinion and expression.
Targeting women journalists’ organizations in Sudan, and in particular our partner, the Al Alag Press Center, the project focuses on developing two tools for collecting and analyzing data related to the prevention of violence against women journalists.
Specifically, this project proposes testing two tools designed to collect data on violence specifically targeting women journalists. The first is a reporting tool that enables organizations in Sudan to receive alerts concerning acts of violence committed against women journalists. The second is a longitudinal survey aimed at documenting the perceptions and experiences of women journalists and citizen journalists.
We start from the following assumption: building a knowledge base (evidence) on violence experienced by women journalists will support the development of violence prevention strategies tailored to the needs of women journalists’ organizations.
Because the initiative specifically targets women journalists’ organizations in Sudan, a gender-based approach is central to the project. One of the challenges, however, is also to raise awareness among men regarding gender-based violence and involve them in the development and implementation of future prevention strategies.
Objectives
The project envisions the creation of a platform aimed at:
– Using data to inform decision-making related to the prevention of violence against women journalists.
– Strengthening the capacity of local Sudanese women journalists’ organizations, particularly Al Alag, to collect and analyze data in support of violence prevention strategies and decision-making.
– Raising awareness among local populations, including men working in the media sector (editors-in-chief, journalists, members of journalists’ unions, etc.), about the importance of reporting tools and data collection related to violence.
– Developing a violence prevention strategy based on the analysis of data collected through the violence survey questionnaire.
Partners
The Al Alag Center for Press Services was established in 2007.
Its vision is to promote greater awareness among media professionals and press leaders regarding issues related to gender, human rights, social justice, and community concerns, while contributing to a broader understanding of the role of journalism in social change.
The project is being implemented with the support of the Innovation and Transformation Fund.
Activities
To date, the project has advanced through the capacity-building phase related to data collection, as well as the preparation and adaptation of information-gathering tools. The data collection phase has also been launched, and awareness campaigns are currently underway.
A webinar on the use of data collection tools (reporting and survey questionnaires). (December 2020).
A webinar on data analysis (January 2021).
The implementation of a survey and a violence reporting form for women who are victims of violence.
Training workshops in Khartoum on the use of the violence victims database (January 2021).
Awareness campaigns and the development of a prevention strategy targeting violence against women journalists.
